Maps and Directions

Hello People of Room 116!

Last week our class went on an adventure. We made left turns, we crossed bridges, and we discovered an amazing park. Along the way we created a class map so we can return in the future. You may want to try this activity with your children. Try taking them somewhere and create a map along the way. Have them label streets, create symbols, use a compass, and make a key. Here are some websites and games to help you and your student learn more about maps:

Pizza Day a Success!

Hello People of Room 116!

Today was the last day of our 4 week long food unit. We ended this unit with a pizza day celebration. Students wrote sentences about pizza, made clay pizzas, painted on old pizza boxes, made real pizza muffins, and even turned a few of our students into pizzas! It was a lot of fun!

We look forward to the coming month of May, when we will be going outside into the community, looking at nature, and ways to protect our planet.

Have a great weekened!

Mr. Grady

Math and Measurement

       Hello People of Room 116,

Even though we are beginning to wrap up our focus on 3D and 2D shapes in room 116, you are encouraged to continue to look and talk about 3D and 2D shapes with your child.

In April, we will begin to take a look at measurement using non-standard units. What is a non-standard unit you ask? Watch this 6 minute cartoon (From Pbskids.org) with your child to get a better idea:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hlkRcTmFxY

Take some time over the next few weeks to:
  • Measure objects in your house/apartment
  • Discuss the temperature outside
  • Compare and contrast the weight of different things
  • Introduce your children to the joys of cooking and let them help measure out ingredients
  • Talk about time. What is a second, minute, hour, day, week, year?
  • Fill a variety of containers with liquid. What holds more? What has the greatest capacity?
Have fun with it and report back to the class the great things you are doing at home.

Best Regards,

Mr. Grady

Tips For Reading Difficult Words

Stuck on a word when reading? Here are a few tips we use in the classroom to help you read on. Always remember: Never let the word win! Read on!

Eagle Eye - Look at the pictures!
  • Look at the pictures for clues.
Lips the Fish - Get your lips ready!
  • Say the first few sounds on the new word.
  • Read to the end of the sentence and say it again.
Stretchy Snake - Stretch it out!
  • Stretch the word out slowly.
  • Put the sounds together.
Chunky Monkey - Chunk the word!
  • Look for a chunk that you know (-at, -an)
  • Look for a word part (-ing, -er)
Skippy Frog - Skip It, Skip It!
  • Skip the word.
  • Read to the end of the sentence.
  • Hop back and READ IT, READ IT!
Tryin' Lion - Try it Again!
  • Try to reread the sentence.
  • Try a word that makes sense.
Helpful Kangaroo - Ask for help!
  • Ask for help (After you have tried all of the other strategies).

Welcome!

Good morning and good afternoon students!
It's never to late to try something new. This blog is meant to keep you up to date on what's happening in the classroom. The hope is it will also give you and your parents a place to go to read and learn together.
